Our journey to Lima involved our first night bus and so we decided to splash out on SUPER VIP - about US$20 for the nine hour trip. We were like kids at the fair - the seats fully reclined, there was movies, food and a hostess! Perhaps it takes months of very long, uncomfortable bus journeys before you can reach the level of excitement we had!
Anyway, Lima. We weren't sure what to expect from Lima, it has a reputation for being particularly dangerous, with very poor districts and for being covered by fog for 8 months of the year! But, like Bogota, we were so pleasantly surprised that we could have stayed!
We stayed in the Miraflores area and enjoyed it's lovely parks, great shopping and ocean views. Oh and great super markets - another seemingly strange thing to be excited about! But they had huge deli sections and encouraged you to try everything which included yummy cheese, sausages, cured meats.....one night we just bought half the deli counter and some red wine for dinner as we just couldn't resist any longer!
Whilst in Lima we visited the historic centre. We decided to brave the local bus in to town - it always makes the journey more interesting. The first ten minutes were fairly torturous as the worlds worst busker got on and started singing some sort of RnB - strangled cat comes to mind (and this is coming from the tone deaf). But the rest of the journey was much better, helped by the chocolate sales man who claimed his delicious chocolates could cure all from cellulite to climate change - yes we did start to question our translation skills! The chocolate was delicious, that's all that is important! The other great thing about bus journeys here are that you ask one person for directions and within five minutes half the bus is trying to help you. Everyone is so lovely, almost competing to give us directions!
We visited a restored convent and saw the remains of 200,000 people in their crypt - very spooky stacks of bones,
The covent looked pretty from the outside...but bones inside
....ate in a crazy chinese restaurant and wondered the streets taking in the hustle of down town Lima before retreating to our hostal in the lovely Miraflores.
